CLIPPERS IN THE COMMUNITY participants from nine centers. Participating recreation centers include Shatto, Normandie, Hubert Humphrey, Rancho Cienega, Imperial, Rosecrans, Alpine, Van Ness, and Expo. The Junior Clippers program serves innercity children, ages 5 to 15. The season runs from early January through the end of March, culminating with a championship tournament in early April. The Junior Clippers program also includes basketball and books clinics, one held at an inner city recreation center and one held at STAPLES Center prior to a Clippers home game. The Clinic Series promotes basketball fundamentals, literacy, health and nutrition, and sportsmanship. MENTORSHIP ASSIST ZONE The LA Clippers partner with local youth organizations to lend an assist with community based mentorship initiatives. The Mentorship Assist Zone program supports local organizations with mentorship recruitment, student incentives, speakers, cultural experiences and group outings. While the program supports all youth mentorship it has a special emphasis on organizations serving youth in underserved communities and young men of color. LA CLIPPERS CHAIRMEN Wheelchair basketball began as rehabilitation for soldiers returning from World War II and was formalized as a competitive sport in 1948, just one season after the NBA. The LA Clippers Chairmen wheelchair basketball team enters its 12th season. The Clippers team up with the National Wheelchair Basketball Association to sponsor the Clippers Chairmen. The Clippers Wheelchair players are not only chairmen of the court, they also participate with the Clippers community outreach to children directing youth to a positive life path. PLAYERS ZONE TICKET DONATION PROGRAM In conjunction with the LA Clippers Foundation, Clippers players host groups of children and make it possible for them to join in the fun and excitement of watching a Clippers game. Clippers players sponsor hundreds of children each season. All children receive goody bags, a chance to watch pre-game warm-up courtside and the opportunity to meet their player host up close and personal. TEAMWORK AT THE TABLE The Clippers team up every November with corporate partners to serve hot Thanksgiving meals complete with all of the trimmings to members of the Bread & Roses Cafe in Venice. Immediately following the Bread & Roses Cafe serving, players and staff reconvene at the St. Joseph Center to distribute clothing, food baskets and turkeys to families. This event has served thousands of homeless individuals and provided thousands of families with food and clothing during the holiday season. CHARITY SEATS - SEASON TICKET HOLDER TICKET DONATION PROGRAM Clippers season ticket holders have the opportunity to give back to the community by donating their unused game tickets to children. The community relations department utilizes donated tickets to provide at risk youth with the chance to attend a Clippers home game. 82 | CLIPPERS GAMETIME MAGAZINE
