SPECIAL THANKS BOWL HISTORY TCU GEORGIA CAMPBELL CLINIC ORTHOPAEDICS Proud to be the Official Sports Medicine Provider for the AutoZone Liberty Bowl 164 | 58th AutoZone Liberty Bowl HONORS BOWL EVENTS WELCOME Before Dr. Willis Campbell became a giant in the field of orthopaedics, he was simply a giant of a man who practiced pediatric medicine. It was as a young pediatrician that he made a lengthy round of house calls on a humid summer day nearly a century ago. Late one afternoon, he stopped in to see a bed-ridden boy and to speak with the child’s rather nervous and overprotective mother. Upon entering the room, the good doctor strode mightily toward the boy’s tiny bed, sat down in a modest wooden chair and removed the stethoscope from his black leather bag. Then suddenly and with a loud snap, Dr. Campbell’s long limbs were sent flailing as the chair he had just occupied splintered under the weight of his sizable frame, setting in motion a series of startled overreactions. The little boy quickly recoiled in fear. The mother shrieked and dove onto the bed to shield her child. The doctor sat stunned at the panic he had caused. And thus, a medical revolution began. After deciding then and there that pediatrics would not be his calling, Dr. Campbell instead made his way to Vienna, Austria, to learn the emerging field of orthopaedics from the world’s foremost orthopaedic practitioners. Upon his return to Memphis, he advanced the science by leaps and bounds, forever shaping a community, a nation, and the lives of millions of patients. First, he established his own clinic. Then, he organized the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Memphis – including the establishment of the first orthopaedic residency program. Dr. Campbell ultimately co-founded the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and also co-founded the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery -- the very board that, to this day, still accredits, certifies, and oversees all doctors in this special area of medicine. Fast forward more than 100 years… Campbell Clinic is now 48 physicians and 500 employees strong. The clinic has five locations in the Memphis area: Germantown, Medical Center, Collierville, Southaven and our new Spine Center. Today, Campbell Clinic is a full service orthopaedic practice that operates its own ambulatory surgery centers, with the clinic also managing two MRI units and offering physical therapy services at all five of its locations. The Germantown and Southaven clinics are also open late until 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, to see walk-in patients who live, work and play on a busy schedule. A Saturday morning clinic is open in Germantown, as well. All five clinic locations take patients on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The physicians at Campbell Clinic specialize in sports medicine, shoulder, spine, total joint replacement, foot & ankle, hand, pediatric orthopaedics, knee, elbow, general orthopaedics, orthopaedic oncology, and physical medicine & rehabilitation. Campbell Clinic physicians are proud to be the sports medicine providers for the Memphis Grizzlies, the Memphis Redbirds, the University of Memphis, the FedEx St. Jude Classic, and many area high schools. One can’t talk about Dr. Willis Campbell and Campbell Clinic without mentioning Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics. First authored by Dr. Campbell, this textbook, which is written by the physicians of Campbell Clinic and published with support from the Campbell Foundation, is used and referenced by orthopaedic physicians worldwide. It is now in its 12th edition, comprised of four volumes including an electronic application and has been translated into seven languages. It is, without a doubt, the “bible” of orthopaedics. Campbell Clinic physicians serve as the faculty for the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and work hand-in-hand with the department’s researchers and scientists conducting pioneering research of new treatments and preventive medicine. Whether it is by developing new treatment methods, inventing new joint implants or treating patients, Campbell Clinic physicians are committed to providing the most advanced orthopaedic care through their private practice and their active programs in research and education. Campbell Clinic provides world-class care to patients right here in Memphis. We’re proud of our century-long tradition of helping you feel better, faster.
