2 0 1 6 R U S S E L L AT H L E T I C B O W L 1 9 Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty through holistic neighborhood revitalization, fostering: • MIXED-INCOME HOUSING • CRADLE TO CAREER EDUCATION • COMMUNITY HEALTH & WELLNESS • LONG-TERM ECONOMIC VIABILITY In 2013, LIFT Orlando initiated the largest urban survey in Orlando history, interviewing nearly 1500 residents to help align efforts with their hopes, dreams and willingness to work for the future of their own community. Recently, LIFT Orlando became the 13th city to join the national network of Purpose Built Communities. This organization, founded by Warren Buffet, Tom Cousins and Julian Robinson, provides free consulting to cities pursuing asset-based redevelopment. EDUCATION Deliver a top-performing cradle to career educational pipeline that begins with early childhood development, continues through post-secondary education and culminates in promising careers. Already, more than 400 children are enrolled in two S.T.E.M. elementary schools. Along with a state-of-the-art high school Medical Sciences Magnet and partnerships with local universities, LIFT Orlando is building a cradleto career education pipeline with pathways to college. Florida Citrus Sports partnered with the College Football Playoff Foundation to bring the Extra Yard for Teachers initiative to the West Lakes footprint. Orlando is the first city to partner with the CFP Foundation outside of the Playoff’s “New Year’s Six” host cities. The Extra Yard for Teachers program helps honor, celebrate, inspire and empower teachers across the nation. Through the partnership and DonorsChoose.org, 100% of classroom resource requests were fulfilled in the 2015-16 academic year. Last year, FCSports redesigned our free summer camp to meet the needs of nearby residents, resulting in a dramatic increase from 3 percent to 97 percent of kids participating coming from the households in the stadium footprint. In 2016, we expanded the summer camp program to a yearround curriculum connecting parents and teachers to create a network of support for the children of West Lakes. HEALTH & WELLNESS Collaborate with residents and local nonprofits to create a mix of highquality facilities, programs, and services that enhance quality of life and increase life expectancy for all, regardless of income. Programs like the S.T.E.M. Teaching Garden at Orange Center Elementary and Project Oasis (an eight-week cooking program) have expanded access to fresh produce and awareness of eating healthy. Florida Citrus Sports and the City of Orlando have collaborated on plans for an $8 million redevelopment of Lake Lorna Doone park adjacent to Camping World Stadium. HOUSING Ensure the availability of high-quality, mixed-income housing that elevates the standard of living for low-income families, while providing the comfort of quality amenities that attract new residents. Ground has already been broken for Pendana at West Lakes, a 200-unit high quality, multifamily development designed for residents of all income levels to come together and enjoy as neighbors. Named by residents after the Swahili house name meaning “To Love One Another” these apartments will be conveniently located near exceptional educational, employment, healthcare and recreational opportunities. Future phases of the housing project will include senior housing, single family townhomes, and programs that will include foreclosure prevention, homebuyer assistance, and home rehab services for existing residents. ECONOMIC VIABILITY Stimulate the neighborhood economy and increase the average household income for existing residents by improving employability, facilitating job placements, attracting employers and fostering entrepreneurship. Through LIFT Orlando, the individual neighborhoods surrounding Camping World Stadium came together for the very first time. By 2014, representatives from each of the neighborhoods organized the West Lakes Partnership to facilitate economic opportunity for neighborhood residents.
