2017 Anthem Annual February

In 1964, when Phoenix Raceway was carved out of the foothills of the Estrella Mountains, it was intended to be a new jewel in the crown of American open-wheel racing. Drivers such as Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones and the Unsers soon came to love the one-mile paved oval with the unique bend in the backstretch. Drivers and fans alike really loved coming to Phoenix, where the tourism industry was starting to grow and its western-style hospitality was second to none. Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series racing came to PR in 1988, and helped turn auto racing in Phoenix into a major sporting attraction for the “Valley of the Sun.” New racing legends and legends-in-the-making like Davey Allison, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and the rest of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stars found out firsthand what their open-wheel brethren had known for years: Phoenix Raceway is truly a great place to race, both for the drivers and the fans. With the track’s new configuration and its distinction as the only track in the West to host two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event weekends annually, Phoenix Raceway has a tradition that is unique among NASCAR tracks. Last year, 2016, saw the addition of a Verizon IndyCar Series race under the lights — a perfect mid-year event in between the two NASCAR race weekends. With NASCAR and INDYCAR on the schedule, PR will have something for just about every race fan this year. 102 ANTHEM MOTORSPORTS ANNUAL
