2017 Anthem Annual February

Established in 1948 with “The Jeff Zelevansky/NASCAR via Getty Images WATKINS GLEN Day They Stopped The Trains” and the first post-World War II road race, Watkins Glen International is synonymous with sports car racing. From a temporary course in 1953 to a permanent, 2.45-mile track built in 1956, The Glen quickly became one of the nation’s favorite racing locales. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, formerly known as the NASCAR Grand National Division, first hit the track in 1957. The track did not host another Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race until 1964 and did so again in 1965, but the series left for another 21 years before coming back in 1986. Tim Richmond won the race, then known as The Bud at the Glen, that year. The Glen has hosted the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series since 1986 and continues to be New York’s only home to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. With a history rich in Formula One, Watkins Glen International has hosted Can-Am, Trans-Am Formula 5000, the Verizon IndyCar Series and continues to boast a diverse annual schedule including: IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Sports Car Club of America, Monster Energy International NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series and Sportscar Vintage Racing Association. International Speedway Corporation became the sole owner of this historic road course in 1997. Following the August 2015 NASCAR weekend, Watkins Glen officials embarked on the first repaving project of The Glen’s 3.4-mile long course – commonly known as “The Boot.” The 25,000 tons of asphalt used in the repave are the equivalent of paving a 22-mile, 2-lane highway at a thickness of 1.5 inches. The project’s hefty price tag was money well-spent, as the all-new surface resulted in a terrific and historic season of racing in 2016. Most memorably for NASCAR fans, Denny Hamlin captured his first career road-course victory in dramatic fashion while Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski tangled just behind him coming to the checkered flag. 138 ANTHEM MOTORSPORTS ANNUAL
