T he holidays mean more than Christmas
lights and jingle bells to San Antonio.
Since the fi rst game in 1993, the Valero
Alamo Bowl has created excitement and pageantry
in San Antonio that rings in the New Year with thrilling
games in front of capacity crowds and record
The 2018 Valero Alamo Bowl is the 26th bowl game that the
Alamodome has hosted. In addition to these 26 games, the Dome
has also hosted nine neutral site contests over the past 25 years,
including the Shamrock Series games involving Notre Dame versus
Washington State and Army. These 35 games have attracted over
2.5 million spectators (over 50 percent are out-of-town visitors),
generated a total economic impact in excess of $860 million and
contributed $110 million to higher education through team payouts
and local scholarships.
The Valero Alamo Bowl also actively pursues neutral site college
football games for San Antonio with the most recent match-ups
being Texas A&M vs. Army (2006), the Big 12 Championship
(2007), Notre Dame vs. Washington State (2009) and Notre
Dame vs Army (2016).
This 26th Valero Alamo Bowl is projecting a $50 million total
economic impact on San Antonio and record local scholarship
giving of over $1 million.
The San Antonio experience for student-athletes, coaches,
administrators and fans is unforgettable. For the Valero Alamo
Bowl, it begins the Thursday after Team Announcement when the
head coaches of the teams selected to play in the bowl fl y to San
Antonio to meet the media.
When the coaches bring their teams back for Bowl Week, players,
coaches and fans are treated to a variety of fun activities including
a trip to SeaWorld and a San Antonio Spurs game, a Pep Rally on the
River Walk, a Kickoff Luncheon and visits to the Alamo and River
Walk that are located right outside of the team hotels.
