OFFICIAL GAME PROGRAM
DECEMBER 28, 2018
On paper, the 2000 SYLVANIA Alamo Bowl was one of the most intriguing matchups
of the bowl season as the power running of No. 8 Nebraska lined up against the
high scoring spread offense of the Big Ten co-champion No. 19 Northwestern Wildcats.
On the fi eld, it was a different story as the Cornuskers showed why they had the nation’s
best rushing offense, overpowering Northwestern in a 66-17 victory.
After Northwestern took a 10-7 lead on a Zak Kustok touchdown pass, Nebraska answered
back as quarterback Eric Crouch scampered for a 50-yard touchdown. The Huskers increased
their lead to 21-10 on their next drive with a Dan Alexander TD run.
Northwestern got back in the game when Damien Anderson broke free for an Alamo Bowlrecord
69-yard touchdown run, but two plays later Nebraska wingback Bobby Newcombe took
a screen pass from Crouch and ran 58 yards for a touchdown.
In the second half, Nebraska scored four unanswered touchdowns. The Husker offense broke
11 Alamo Bowl records — most notably team records for most points in a game (66), most
yards total offense (636), most yards rushing (467) and most fi rst downs (28). At the time,
the squad’s 66 points were also an NCAA bowl record.
Alexander, who was selected as the Offensive MVP, set a bowl record with 240 yards rushing
on just 20 carries. Crouch, who won the Heisman Trophy the following season, fi nished the day
with a bowl record four touchdowns (two rushing and two passing) and Husker place-kicker
Josh Brown set a bowl record with nine PATs.
T he No. 13 Penn State Nittany Lions used the spark
from its strong defensive squad to defeat No. 18 Texas
A&M 24-0 in the 1999 SYLVANIA Alamo Bowl. A thenrecord
crowd of 65,380 was on hand and another 6.4 million watched
the two tradition-rich programs square off on ESPN.
The Nittany Lion defense attacked early and often as A&M
quarterback Randy McCown had his first two pass attempts
intercepted, including a 34-yard return for the fi rst score of the
game by Penn State’s Derek Fox.
While the dominating Penn State defense stifl ed the A&M offense,
Penn State quarterback Rashard Casey, who earned Offensive MVP
honors, threw for one touchdown and ran for another stretching
Penn State’s lead to 21-0.
All-American linebacker and Defensive MVP LaVar Arrington led the
defensive charge for Penn State with an Alamo Bowl record 14 tackles.
The defense led by future NFL veterans Arrington, defensive end
Courtney Brown and linebacker Brandon Short pressured McCown
into throwing four interceptions. Brown and Arrington were selected
with the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the 2000 NFL Draft respectively.
Note: Penn State later vacated this win due to NCAA penalties.
