Running backs Jackie Jensen, Hugh McElhenny and
Johnny Olszewski begat Chuck Muncie, Russell White
and Marshawn Lynch in the long line of dominant ball
carriers, and the quarterback depth is just as rich.
Aaron Rodgers and Jared Goff, who left school 10 years
apart, have made their mark on the NFL.
Rodgers is not stranger to Chase Field. He passed for
394 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more
touchdowns as the MVP of the 2003 Insight Bowl, a 52-
49 victory over Virginia Tech.
With these defenses, that kind of game may not break
out tonight.
Expect grind.
“Any time you get into a ball game where it’s going
to be hard-hitting and it’s going to be a close game,
everybody gets excited about it,” Patterson said.
“Whether it is high-scoring or low-scoring, it makes no
difference. What both sides are trying to do is win by

Slingin’ Sammy Baugh nished fourth in the Heisman
Trophy voting in 1936, the second year the trophy was
presented, and Davey O’Brien won it two years later.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was ninth
in 2010, and Trevor Boykin nished fourth and ninth
in 2014-15. Running back Jim Swink was a two-time
All-America selection in the mid-1950s and LaDanian
Tomlinson continued the running back tradition as a
consensus All-America in 2000. Baugh, O’Brien and
Tomlinson have had their numbers retired.
Horned Frogs defensive tackle Bob Lilly was a
unanimous All-America choice in 1960 before becoming
a member of the Dallas Cowboys’ “Doomsday
Defense.” He earned seven rst-team All-Pro
selections, played in 11 Pro Bowls, and is enshrined in
both the College Football Hall of the Football and the
Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Cal’s tradition began a century ago, soon after the
school turned from rugby to football. The Bears were the
consensus national champion in 1920 and shared the title
