OKLAHOMA STATE SEASON IN REVIEW
Game 1: Oklahoma State 58, Missouri State 17
August 30 | Boone Pickens Stadium
Taylor Cornelius passed for 295 yards and five touchdowns
in his first career start to help Oklahoma State defeat Missouri
State 58-17 on Thursday night.
Cornelius had been Mason Rudolph’s backup for most of his
career, but Rudolph now is with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cornelius,
a fifth-year senior, seized his opportunity by completing 24
of 34 passes and rushing for 27 yards in the season opener for
Jalen McCleskey caught two touchdown passes and ran for
another score, Justice Hill ran for 122 yards and a touchdown
and LD Brown added 115 yards and a score for Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys gained 732 yards, the third-highest total in school
Oklahoma State led 17-0 at the end of the first quarter and
outgained the Bears 280 yards to 9 in the period. Hill scored on
a 3-yard touchdown run on Oklahoma State’s opening possession.
Later in the first quarter, he took off for a 93-yard run before
being stopped at the Missouri State 2-yard line. It was the
fourth-longest run in Oklahoma State history, and it pushed him
into 10th place on Oklahoma State’s career rushing list.
Peyton Huslig passed for 150 yards and two touchdowns and
rushed for 109 yards for Missouri State.
The Bears struggled from the start, and things got worse when
linebacker Angelo Garbutt was ejected late in the first quarter for
a helmet-to-helmet hit.
The Cowboys simply overpowered the Bears. They ran on 55
of their 92 plays, and most of their passes were short, high-percentage
Game 2: Oklahoma State 55, South Alabama 13
September 8 | Boone Pickens Stadium
Taylor Cornelius completed 25 of 40 passes for 428 yards and one
touchdown to help lead Oklahoma State to a 55-13 victory over
South Alabama Saturday night.
Tylan Wallace (10 receptions for 166 yards and one touchdowns) and
Tyron Johnson (five catches, 137 yards) each recorded breakout, career
high totals for the Cowboys (2-0).
While South Alabama (0-2) committed to stopping the Oklahoma
State ground game, holding the Cowboys to just 164 yards rushing, OSU
still scored four rushing touchdowns, including two by Justice Hill.
Overall, Oklahoma State outgained South Alabama 617-214 in total
Evan Orth, making his first career start, completed 14 of 25 passes for
119 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars. Receiver Kawaan Baker led
South Alabama in rushing with 40 yards and one touchdown on seven
carries, while also registering three receptions for 29 yards, including a
12-yard score with 2:57 left in the second quarter that pulled the Jaguars
to within 24-13.
In his second career start, Cornelius showed many of the same qualities
he did in his debut last week in a 58-17 win over Missouri State,
when he was 25 of 35 for 300 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
Once again, he put forth an admirable performance, displaying
skill and poise, with a few mistakes sprinkled in. He did throw two interceptions,
although one needed a video review to determine that South
Alabama’s Tobias Moss held onto the ball, with the other one coming in
the end zone.
