• Soccer is a popular sport
in the Special Olympics
North Carolina program and
was first demonstrated at
the 1984 Special Olympics
North Carolina Summer
Games. It is now a part of Fall
• For team competition, a screening round is held the
first day. Preliminary games are played in round-robin
format on the second day and then final rounds are
held on the third day at the state level.
• Based on qualifying information, athletes and teams
are put into divisions, which are competitive groupings.
Teams are in divisions of 3-4 teams, while skills divisions
can have as many as eight athletes.
All awards are given on the last day of
competition. Skills athletes must wait for
everyone in their division to complete
competition before places can be determined,
so there may be a delay since not all athletes
will finish at the same time. Teams will receive
awards as deciding games conclude.
What is round-robin competition?
The second day of competition is when
the competitive divisions do round-robin.
Round-robin competition means that each
team in each division will play all of the
other teams in their division once.

Individual skills: athletes who may not be ready
