BOX SCORE: 1ST 2ND 3RD 4TH FINAL
Texas Tech 7 13 7 14 41

The 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl didn’t disappoint as 64,757 fans packed the
Alamodome for its sixth largest crowd in Alamo Bowl history and its
third sellout in its last four bowl games. With turmoil surrounding the
firing of Mike Leach, Texas Tech interim head coach Ruffin McNeill was able to
keep the Red Raiders focused.
Texas Tech jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter after Baron Batch
rushed for a 3-yard touchdown. Michigan State countered the Red Raiders attack
as Edwin Baker rushed up the middle for 46 yards scoring the Spartans’ first TD
of the game and the first of his career.
The fireworks continued to go off in the second quarter as Texas Tech scored
three times on two field goals and a Taylor Potts touchdown toss to Lyle Leong.
MSU scored on a 48-yard bomb from Kirk Cousins to Keshawn Martin. Michigan
State trailed 20-14 at halftime.
Early in the third, Cousins rushed up the middle on a quarterback draw pushing
Michigan State into the lead 21-20. The back-and-forth battle continued as the
Red Raiders responded with a touchdown as Potts hit Jacoby Franks for a 14-yard
touchdown bringing the score to 27-21. Late in the quarter, in the wildcat formation,
Keshawn Martin dumped one over the middle to wide receiver Blair White for an
eight-yard touchdown giving the Spartans the lead.
MSU took a 28-27 lead into the fourth quarter, and appeared to get a break
when Tech quarterback Taylor Potts left the game after injuring his non-throwing
hand. He left after throwing for 372 yards, second-most in Alamo Bowl history.
With Tech down 31-27, backup QB Steven Sheffield marched the Red Raiders
downfield in eight plays, the last an 11-yard touchdown pass to Detron Lewis
taking the lead 34-31. Baron Batch tacked on a 25-yard touchdown run late in
the game to seal the victory.
Texas Tech quarterback Taylor
Potts threw for two touchdowns
and 372 yards before leaving late
in the game with an injury.
