The Iowa Hawkeyes were unable to hold on to their 11-point lead at
halftime as the No. 18 Texas Longhorns came from behind to win the
2006 Alamo Bowl 26-24.
Texas was heavily favored playing in their first Alamo Bowl in front of a sellout
crowd of 65,875, most of which was decked out in burnt-orange. The Hawkeyes were
able to hold the Longhorns to only one score in the first. Iowa running back Albert
Young scored on the Hawkeyes first possession setting the tone for the game.
In the second quarter, Defensive MVP Aaron Ross got the Longhorns back
on track with an interception in the end zone setting up Texas for their first
touchdown of the game.
Freshman quarterback Colt McCoy looked shaky early, but was able to
pull it together in the third quarter with a 20-yard pass to Limas Sweed and
a 72-yard sideline strike to tailback Jamaal Charles giving Texas its first lead
(20-14). With 1:08 left in the third Iowa’s Andy Brodell recaptured the lead with
a 23-yard reception from Drew Tate. Brodell had six catches for 159 yards and
In the fourth quarter, McCoy rushed for eight yards on a fourth down to set
up a two-yard touchdown run by tailback Selvin Young, which proved to be
the game winner.
Texas won its third straight bowl game and became the first team to win the
Alamo Bowl after trailing at halftime. Iowa’s Andy Brodell hauled in 159 yards
receiving in the losing effort. Offensive MVP honors went to the Longhorns’ McCoy

The 20th ranked Michigan Wolverines nearly pulled off the improbable
against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the 2005 MasterCard Alamo Bowl.
Down by four with two seconds remaining, Michigan made a bid for
one of the most exciting final plays in college bowl history. Michigan quarterback
Chad Henne completed a short pass that started a chain of eight laterals and
a near miracle.
Coaches and players from both teams made their way onto the field mid-play
thinking the game had ended as Michigan’s Tyler Ecker caught the eighth lateral
and scampered up the sideline toward the end zone.
Nebraska cornerback Titus Brothers never quit on the play and knocked Ecker out
of bounds at the Nebraska 13-yard line to secure the Cornhuskers’ 32-28 victory.
Henne tied then-Alamo Bowl record for most passing and rushing touchdowns
by a quarterback. He finished with three touchdown passes and rushed for another
to give Michigan a 28-17 lead. But Nebraska scored two unanswered touchdowns,
the second courtesy of wide receiver Terrence Nunn. He caught quarterback Zac
Taylor’s third touchdown toss of the night with 4:29 left to give Nebraska the lead
for good. Taylor finished 14 of 31 for 167 yards.
Running back Cory Ross, who earned Offensive MVP honors, tallied 161 rushing
yards and found the end zone once on a 31-yard touchdown run. Michigan
cornerback Leon Hall became the first Defensive MVP from a losing team in Alamo
Bowl history after he intercepted Taylor twice in the first half.
