SERVING OUR COMMUNITY
While the Valero Alamo Bowl’s primary mission is to bring a positive
economic impact to San Antonio through the annual college football
bowl game, the Valero Alamo Bowl also participates in a variety of
community outreach efforts each year.
In 2019, Valero Alamo Bowl scholarship programs will award over $1 million
to local high school and college students.
75 winners representing 64 San Antonio area high schools sharing $562,500
in Valero Alamo Bowl scholarships were recognized at an awards luncheon
on December 17 courtesy of H-E-B. These outstanding achievers were also
given tickets to the Valero Alamo Bowl courtesy of Frost where they will be
recognized on the field.
In addition, the Valero Alamo Bowl recognized 64 college scholarship winners
representing all six of San Antonio’s four-year universities at the annual Rudy’s
Bar-B-Q Pigskin Preview Luncheon on August 29: University of the Incarnate Word,
Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, Texas A&M–San Antonio,
Trinity University and UTSA.
Since 2001, the Valero Alamo Bowl has distributed over $5.1 million in
scholarships to San Antonio area students. Funds for the scholarships are raised
through Valero Alamo Bowl events during the year and contributions from Valero.
Shining Star ENERGY underwrites the Valero Alamo Bowl Youth Football Clinic,
the tenth installment of this camp provided at no charge. Over 400 campers
stormed the Alamodome’s turf for the clinic on July 19. Coaches from some of
San Antonio’s local universities and high schools were met by an enthusiastic
group of kids ranging from 7 to 14 years old that could not wait to jump into the
action. Campers learned a variety of drills ranging from how to throw passes as
quarterback to perfecting proper tackling technique as linebackers and even
how to preform perfect the touchdown celebration!
