The University of Oklahoma spirit program includes OU Cheer (co-ed and
all-girl), OU Pom, costumed mascots Boomer and Sooner, the historic
Sooner Schooner and the RUF/NEKS and RUF/NEK Lil Sis spirit groups.
Additionally, the Pride of Oklahoma, the Sooners’ marching band, plays a
key role in building the spirit at athletics events.
The purpose of the OU Spirit Program is to support the mission of The
University of Oklahoma Athletics Department by generating crowd
enthusiasm, serving as ambassadors for The University of Oklahoma and
the Norman community, and having fun while maintaining the traditions of
those who have come before.
The spirit program operates under the supervision of Phil O’Neill, the spirit
program director. Miranda Noel, cheer coach, supervises the two OU cheer
squads, while Taylor Burget, pom coach, supervises the pom squad, and
Mark Chaney supervises the RUF/NEKS and RUF/NEK Lil Sis spirit groups.
Boomer and Sooner are the costumed mascots who represent the
University of Oklahoma and the OU Athletics Department. The characters
are an extension of the Sooner Schooner and its horses to be enjoyed by
fans — especially children — at all OU athletics contests, charity events
and visits to children’s hospitals.
The Sooner Schooner, one of the most recognized symbols in intercollegiate
athletics, is the official mascot of the University of Oklahoma.
The Pride of Oklahoma, a campus tradition since 1904, is led onto the field
by drum major Paxton Leaf. Brian Britt serves as director of athletics bands,
and Dr. Brian Wolfe is assistant director. Dr. Shanti Simon is director of
