COLLEGE FOOTBALL’S MOST COVETED COACHING AWARD
These days, college football has “Coach of the Year” awards
coming from every corner, with little to distinguish one from
One coaching award, however, stands head and shoulders above
the rest. The Dodd Trophy presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl
honors much more than a coach’s success on the field.
The Dodd Trophy, named for legendary Georgia Tech coach Bobby
Dodd, was established in 1976 to honor the FBS football coach
whose program represents three pillars of success: Scholarship,
Leadership and Integrity. The award honors the coach of a team
with a successful season on the field and equally as important,
stresses the importance of academic excellence and desire to give
back to the community.
In 2014, Peach Bowl, Inc. officially assumed management of this
prestigious award, collaborating with the Bobby Dodd Coach of
the Year Foundation to elevate and increase exposure of The Dodd
Trophy. The mutually beneficial partnership gives what has been
called the “Heisman Trophy of Coaching” a national platform that
only a College Football Playoff bowl game can provide, including
an ongoing ‘watch list,’ a Coach of the Week award and elevated
exposure during the Bowl game itself.
As philosophically aligned organizations, Peach Bowl, Inc. and
The Dodd Trophy are committed to recognizing and celebrating
scholarship, leadership and integrity now and into the future.
Both organizations are proud to honor Utah head coach Kyle
Whittingham as the recipient of the 2019 Dodd Trophy.
Whittingham led the Utes to an impressive 11-win season and a
berth in the Pac-12 Championship game for the second consecutive
year. With 15 seasons at the helm at Utah, Kyle Whittingham is
now the longest-tenured coach in the Pac-12 Conference and
the third-longest tenured head coach at the same school in the
FBS. Including his 11 seasons as a Ute assistant coach, he has
contributed to more victories than any
coach in program history. Whittingham

also boasts the second-best bowl win percentage in NCAA history
(84 percent), and his 11 bowl wins ties him for second among
active coaches and ranks in the top-10 all-time.
Utah has also excelled academically under Whittingham. Since
he became head coach in 2005, his players have earned four
Academic All-America citations and 255 academic all-conference
awards. Utah football received public recognition from the NCAA
for posting a multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10
percent of all athletic teams in the country from 2014-18, including
a perfect single-year APR score of 1000 in 2017-18.
In the community, Whittingham prides himself on giving back and
providing better opportunities for student-athletes to succeed.
He has been integral in the creation of the Ute Academy, a
resource center for current and former student-athletes focused on
professional and personal development.
