The Eagles rallied from a 31-10 deficit with only 8:17 remaining in
an NFC East showdown with the New York Giants.
Behind Michael Vick’s three touchdowns (two passing, one
rushing), the Eagles tied the game with 1:16 remaining then
forced the Giants to punt. With just 14 seconds left, it appeared
as if the game was destined for overtime until DeSean Jackson
returned Matt Dodge’s punt 65 yards for the first walk-off punt
return win in NFL history.
“I was shocked that they punted the ball to DeSean. All they
needed to do was punt the ball out of bounds and you go
to overtime. I didn’t see any upside for the Giants to give
us a possession with an electric punt returner,” Lurie says.
That was a crazy game. That was truly the most unbelievable
comeback I’ve seen or been a part of in my 25 years with the
team. It was a very important game. It was for the division.
“I’ll always remember him lingering along the goal line
waiting till the time ran out so the other team couldn’t
receive a kickoff. Until the Super Bowl win, that was probably
my favorite game.”
Jackson returned this offseason after five years away from the
team in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“It’s great having him back, great attitude,” Lurie says. “Seems
like a mature veteran out there. Everyone’s thrilled to have
him back. He has a special e nergy that’s contagious.”
