Coaches of the Year
1963 Al Davis
In 1963, Al Davis became the first Raiders
head coach to be honored as the Coach of the
Year after taking over a team that had won
three games in the previous two years and
was picked to finish dead last that season and
steamrolled to 10 wins, just missing out on
the division championship.
1967 JOHN RAUCH
John Rauch was named the Pro Football
Coach of the Year in 1967 after he guided
the Raiders to a 13-1 regular season record
and the AFL Championship. Following a loss
to the New York Jets in the fourth game of the
year, Rauch’s Raiders rolled to 11 consecutive
wins on the way to the Silver and Black’s first
appearance in the Super Bowl.
1969 JOHN MADDEN
After leading the Raiders to a 12-1-1
regular season record and a berth in the AFL
Championship Game in his first season as
head coach, John Madden was named Pro
Football Coach of the Year in 1969. Madden
became the third different Raiders head
coach to win the award in just six years.
2016 Jack Del Rio
Jack Del Rio was selected as the recipient of
the Maxwell Club’s Greasy Neale Professional
Coach of the Year Award for 2016. The honor
came after leading the Raiders to a 12-4 record
and a playoff berth and came in addition to
earning AFC Coach of the Year honors from the
Committee of 101 in Kansas City.
1982 Tom Flores
Tom Flores became the fourth Raiders head
coach to win the Coach of the Year award in
1982. In a strike-shortened season, Flores
led the Silver and Black to an 8-1 regular
season record. In just four seasons, Flores
established himself as one of the brightest
coaches in all of football after winning the
World Championship of Professional Football
in 1980.
1990 Art Shell
Hall of Fame offensive tackle Art Shell was
named Coach of the Year after taking the
Raiders from 8-8 in his first season to a 12-4
record in 1990. The Raiders that year stormed
to the AFC Western Division championship
and topped Cincinnati in the playoffs on
the way to their first appearance in the AFC
Championship Game in seven years.
