Taver Johnson enters his first season with the
Silver and Black as the assistant defensive
backs coach, bringing 25 years of experience
to the post. Johnson joins the Raiders after serving his second stint with Ohio
State as the cornerbacks coach last year.
In 2018, Johnson helped the Buckeyes post a 13-1 record and claim the
eighth Rose Bowl victory in school history, while tutoring a young secondary
unit that held opponents to a 32.7 percent third-down conversion rate on the
season, ranking 15th in the nation.
Before returning to Ohio State, Johnson spent the 2017 season at Temple
as the defensive coordinator. Johnson led a defense that ranked first in the
American Athletic Conference and 11th in the nation with 39 sacks.
Johnson worked as the defensive backs coach at Purdue for three seasons
(2014-16) after spending two seasons with Arkansas as the assistant head
coach/linebackers coach (2012) and the defensive backs coach (2013).
In his first stint at Ohio State, Johnson served as the defensive backs coach
from 2007-11, helping the Buckeyes win four straight Big Ten Conference
titles and earn four BCS bowl game appearances.
Johnson first entered the NFL as a special teams assistant with the Cleveland
Browns in 2004.
After first starting as the linebackers coach at Miami (Ohio) from 2000-03,
Johnson returned as the defensive coordinator from 2005-06. Johnson worked
with the defense as a graduate assistant at Notre Dame in 1999.
Johnson began his coaching career at his alma mater Wittenberg, an NCAA
Division III school. He then spent three seasons at Division III Milikin.
PERSONAL: Native of Cincinnati, Ohio…A two-time Division III All-American
at Wittenberg and North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in
1992 and 1993…Received his degree in business administration from Wittenberg…
Johnson and his wife, Sharday, have a son, Tyree, and a daughter, Brooklynn.
DAVID LIPPINCOTT
LINEBACKERS

David Lippincott enters his second season with
the Silver and Black as linebackers coach,
after serving 10 seasons with the Cincinnati
Bengals. He begins his 12th season in the NFL, while holding 19 years of
coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional level.
In 2018, Lippincott saw his unit finish 19th overall in pass defense, a sevenspot
improvement from their 26th overall ranking in 2017. Leading his group
was newcomer LB Tahir Whitehead, who ranked ninth in the NFL and seventh in
Raiders history with 126 tackles (89 solo).
Lippincott completed his 10th season with the Bengals in 2017, with the
campaign marking his seventh year as a full-time member on staff after serving the
first three as a coaching assistant. During his full-time tenure, the Bengals made the
playoffs in five-of-seven seasons and won AFC North titles twice (2013 and 2015).
As an assistant linebackers/quality control coach for the Bengals from 2012-
17, Lippincott helped develop one of the league’s most effective defenses. His
unit ranked in the NFL’s top half in fewest points allowed per game, finishing in
the top-10 in five of those years.
From 2008-2010, Lippincott served as a coaching assistant in Cincinnati,
working in the scouting department while also helping with the wide receivers.
Prior to entering the NFL, Lippincott spent three seasons at the University of
Richmond, where he coached safeties (2007) and defensive ends (2005-06).
Lippincott spent two years with the University of Minnesota as a graduate
assistant from 2003-04 and was appointed the team’s interim linebacker coach in
his last game. He began his coaching career at Bluffton University from 2000-02.
PERSONAL: Native of Cincinnati, Ohio…Attended University of Dayton
during his undergraduate studies, serving as an undergraduate defensive
assistant and defensive line co-coach during his four years with the Flyers…A
graduate of Moeller High School in Cincinnati…He and his wife, Lisa, have two
children, a daughter, Sophia, and son, Declan.
