Jim O’Neil enters his second season with the
Raiders and 10th year as an NFL coach, having
spent the three years prior to Oakland as an NFL
defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers.
During his first year in Oakland, O’Neil worked closely with the secondary,
helping the unit record 14 interceptions after recording just five the previous
year. The Raiders also saw a 21-place improvement in passes defensed, finishing
the year tied for ninth in the NFL with 73 after finishing tied for 30th in 2017.
In 2016, O’Neil served as the defensive coordinator for San Francisco. Under
O’Neil, the 49ers improved 13 spots from 2015 to finish 14th in the NFL in passing
defense (240.5 ypg.), 10 spots in sacks (33, T-19) and 11 spots in takeaways (20,
T-19). O’Neil spent two seasons (2014-15) with the Browns in the same capacity,
leading a defense that ranked sixth in the NFL in opposing quarterback completion
percentage (59.6) and tied for seventh in interceptions (32) during his tenure.
In 2013, O’Neil worked with the linebackers for the Buffalo Bills. The Bills
finished 10th in the NFL in total defense (333.4 yards per game).
O’Neil spent four seasons with the New York Jets from 2009-12, first as
the defensive quality control/defensive backs coach in 2009 and then as the
assistant defensive backs coach from 2010-12. During that span, the Jets
defense led the NFL in opponent passer rating (71.0), completion percentage
(52.6) and passing yards per game (186.3).
Before entering the NFL, O’Neil spent eight years as a coach at the collegiate
level serving in various roles with Eastern Michigan (2006-08), Towson (2005),
Northwestern (2003-04), Penn (2002) and SUNY-Albany (2001).
PERSONAL: Native of Doylestown, Pa. …A three-year starter as a defensive
lineman at Towson…Earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management from
Towson…Earned a master of arts degree in liberal arts from Northwestern and
a master of science degree in education from SUNY-Albany…He and his wife,
Stacy, have two sons, Danny and Kellan, and a daughter, Riley.
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING ASSISTANT

Rick Slate, who has 31 years of strength and
conditioning experience, enters his second
season with the Silver and Black as a strength
and conditioning assistant. He joined the Raiders after spending 25 seasons in
Major League Baseball with the Florida Marlins, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves.
In his first season with the Raiders, Slate helped implement the team’s strength
and conditioning program while working with position groups throughout the roster.
Slate worked with TE Jared Cook as he earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2018
and saw C Rodney Hudson and G/T Kelechi Osemele be named Pro Bowl alternates.
Prior to entering the NFL, Slate was with the Braves organization from
2011-17 as the team’s director of strength and conditioning. Slate initially
joined Atlanta in 2011 and served as the Braves’ minor league strength and
conditioning coordinator before being promoted in 2012.
From 2003-10, Slate was the New York Mets’ strength and conditioning
coordinator. Slate helped the club win the NL East title in 2006, their first division
crown since 1988, and went on to reach the League Championship Series.
Slate began his professional career with the Marlins in 1992, one year prior
to their inaugural season, as the team’s minor league strength and conditioning
coordinator. He was promoted in 1993 and served as Florida’s strength and
conditioning coordinator for nine years, helping them win the 1997 World Series.
Before entering professional baseball, Slate spent six years at Florida State
as an assistant strength and conditioning coach from 1987-92.
PERSONAL: Native of St. Augustine, Fla. … Attended Florida State earning
a bachelor’s degree in sports management and a master’s certificate in athletic
administration…Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach and Registered
Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and
Conditioning Association…Holds numerous other certifications including CrossFit
Level 1, SFG Kettlebell Instructor Level 1 and 2, USAW Club Coach Level 1,
USTF Level 1, FMS Level 1 and CPR…Has two daughters, Layla and Jada.
