For the second year in a row and the 26th time
in program history, the men’s fencing team
captured the New England Intercollegiate Fencing
Conference Championship. The epee team
claimed first place with a 30-3 ledger, helping it
earn a share of Silvio Vitale Cup, which goes to the
squad with the highest winning percentage. The
sabre unit also ranked first in the standings while

At the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship, Aaron
Lu placed a career-best 12th place in sabre while Avi Zeff
ranked 24th in the foil standings. Chris Picard paced the epee

Aaron Lu and Josh Sohn were named to the
Northeast Fencing Conference Sabre All-Star
First Team while Robert Law was a Foil All-Star
Second Team selection. This was the seventh
year in row the Engineers received a Sabre First
Team award and ninth straight season with a
Sabre All-Star recipient. On the foil side, this
was the second time in three years MIT was

Aaron Lu was named to the newly established
United States Fencing Coaches Association
Northeast All-Region Team. He received All-
Region Sabre Honorable Mention accolades
after placing 12th at the NCAA Northeast

The men’s fencing team produced four top-10
finishes at The Big One Invitational. Robert
Law led the way with a fifth-place finish in
foil while Yixuan Pei recorded a career-best
seventh-place performance for the epee unit.

With over 30 years of international level competition, as both a coach and an accomplished
athlete, Jarek Koniusz enters his 26th year at the helm of MIT’s men’s and women’s fencing
programs. A four-time Northeast Fencing Conference Coach of the Year, he has built MIT fencing
into a perennial powerhouse, qualifying 45 fencers to the NCAA Championship and guiding the
