EMILY HAIG & MAILE JIM
“I choose to attend MIT for the passionate, engaging people and communities,
whether that interest was in academics, athletics, community service, or other
hobbies. At MIT, I can also compete in the highest levels of sailing competition while
attending a top academic school, and I wouldn’t want to have to give up either. There
are also good academic opportunities through undergraduate research, project
classes, and international internships.” - Maile Jim ‘22

finished third at the highly competitive Mrs.
Hurst Bowl in September of 2019. Head
coach Matt Lindblad led Dana Haig, Kaila
Pfrang, Isabelle Yen and Abbie Lee over
the weekend as the Engineers posted just
71 points which was good enough for third
place only behind No. 7 Dartmouth College
and No. 2 Yale University. (FULL STORY)
“Sailing at MIT gives a very unique
opportunity for people from all backgrounds,
both for highly skilled high school sailors
and people who have never been on the
water before. All student-athletes put so
much time into perfecting their sport, but
this definitely pays off in terms of new
skills, abilities, memories, and friendships.
The athletic department and my individual
team have been such a positive part of my
college experience.” - Maile Jim ‘22
“MIT has top notch academics and sailing.
I also love the Boston location and the
fact that MIT has a top business school.”
- Emily Haig ‘21
Mike Kalin enters his 13th season coaching the MIT sailing team
in 2020-21. During his time in Cambridge, he has lifted the
program to be one of most competitive teams in New England
and in the nation. In 2018, the Engineers made history as the
coed team won its first ICSA National Championship since 1961.
That same season, the women’s squad took fourth place at
nationals. Then in 2019, his women’s team claimed its first
NEISA Championship in program history. (FULL BIO)
“My favorite memory was when we had a
Halloween practice where we wore costumes
and my crew and I made pirate costumes
out of old career fair t-shirts. We painted
on a skull and cross bones and improvised
eye-patches by popping out a sunglass lens.”
- Emily Haig ‘21
Marcus Abate, Emily Haig, Brooke
McGoldrick, Kaila Pfrang, Liz Obermaier
and Dana Haig all earned All-Conference

“One of my favorite experiences on the sailing team is our team dinner after every practice. As a first-year, I felt immediately
welcomed into the culture of the team and MIT as a whole, and now as an upperclassman, it’s an opportunity to hang out with some
of my best friends. I’ve also really enjoyed the chance to travel all over the east coast for competitions and our annual spring break
training trip to develop sailing skills for many different conditions and venues.” - Maile Jim ‘22
