For the 13th consecutive season, MIT earned the ITA All-
Academic Team Award for posting a 3.20 cumulative grade point
average (on a 4.00 scale). In addition, Michael Zhao, Albert Go,
Richter Jordaan and Derek Shen all were named as ITA Scholar-
Athletes for their hard work in the classroom. (FULL STORY)
“Being a student-athlete at MIT is great because you
get to bond with people on the team who have the same
experience growing up playing the same sport as you. The
time commitment is not overwhelming and Coach Hagymas
is very understanding of things like exams and interviews. I
think spending time on the court is very healthy as well just in
terms of getting away from the stress of studying for a couple
of hours a day.” - Arman Dave ‘22
“I chose MIT in order to
pursue my goals both
academically and athletically,
and I knew that there would
be a strong culture of
support, collaboration, and
teamwork both on and off the
court.” - Richter Jordaan ‘23

“My favorite memory was when Babson, our
biggest rivals in the NEWMAC, brought around
30 people for our dual match my freshman year,
which is a lot for tennis and can get pretty loud
in the indoor bubble. But everybody on MIT
showed tremendous toughness in the face of
that adversity, and we ended up winning pretty
handily.” - Arman Dave ‘22
“Being a student-athlete at MIT is an especially
cool experience because my teammates and
coaches are mentors in tennis and in navigating
MIT and life generally. Our team encourages each
other to improve in practice and in matches. This
makes our team camaraderie and tennis really
fun.” - Richter Jordaan ‘23
Dave Hagymas, a five-time NEWMAC Coach of the Year, enters his 16th season at the helm of
the MIT men’s varsity tennis program in 2020-21. In his time with the Engineers, Hagymas has
directed the team to a NEWMAC Championship and trips to the NCAA Tournament 14 times.
During his tenure at MIT, he has compiled an overall record of 213-69 in dual matches, including
an 75-1 mark in conference play. In total, Hagymas has seen five of his student-athletes qualify
for the NCAA singles or doubles championship tournaments and four of them earn NCAA All-
America honors. (FULL BIO)

“Towards the end of high school, it became very
clear that tennis was going to come to an end in
four years, even if I already knew that in the back
of my head. I wanted to attend a school where I
would actually be a student-athlete as opposed
to an athlete who also happens to attend that
school. MIT struck me as a great place to balance
both in terms of being able to prioritize studies
while still having the opportunity to compete at
a high level in the sport I’d been playing for ten
years.” - Arman Dave ‘22
