Special Olympics Northern California (SONC) relies on the dedication of nearly
8,000 volunteer coaches to help lead 22,780 athletes in 14 diff erent sports.
Coaching can be a fun and rewarding way to get involved in the community
and provides hands-on engagement to support children and adults with
intellectual disabilities. No experience or sports background is necessary!
We’ve introduced an easy and effi cient way for you to become a certifi ed coach
and learn valuable information to be successful. The Special Ol ympics Northern
California Coaching Special Olympics Athletes Course meets the Coaching
Special Olympics Athletes (CSOA) requirement of Special Olympics North
America (SONA) and can be completed online at www.VolunteerforSONC.org.

to provide a positive and successful experience.

Teaching & Training
There are many ways to organize a training session for Special Olympics
athletes in your area. This unit off ers advice and tips for hosting practices
and ways to develop athletes and prepare for competitions.
