The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is Special Olympics’ largest grassroots
fundraiser and encompasses the Torch Run and numerous events year-round hosted by
members of law enforcement raising money for Special Olympics.
The Torch Run features law enforcement personnel (known as the “Guardians of the
Flame”) carrying the Flame of Hope to local, regional and statewide competitions. The
runs raise awareness for Special Olympics, often happening through the center of
towns or major public areas, and also generate significant funding through donations
and sponsorships garnered by the law enforcement personnel. In addition, LETR hosts
events throughout the year including Tip-A-Cops; where officers serve as waiters
at local restaurants and collect “tips” for Special Olympics. Law enforcement also
organizes the annual Bike the Bridges & BrewFest event and raises significant money at
the Polar Plunge fundraisers.
LETR events have generated in excess of $13.5 million for Special Olympics Northern
California since 1996.
