Frank Smith enters his second season as tight
ends coach with the Silver and Black, bringing
with him 15 years of coaching experience,
including nine in the NFL.
During his first season in Oakland, Smith helped TE Jared Cook to his first
Pro Bowl selection after career highs in receiving yards (896), receptions (68)
and touchdowns (six). Cook finished the season ranked fourth among tight ends
in receiving yards, and his 15 receptions of at least 20 yards ranked third
among his position.
Prior to Oakland, Smith spent the previous three seasons as tight ends coach
with the Chicago Bears (2015-17). During Smith’s tenure, TE Zach Miller
recorded 1,161 yards on 101 receptions with 11 touchdowns, tied for 13th in
the NFL among tight ends during that span, despite only playing in 33 games
because of injuries.
Prior to joining the Bears, Smith spent five seasons with the New Orleans
Saints (2010-14) as an offensive assistant. Smith worked closely with an
offensive line that allowed only 143 sacks, third fewest in the NFL during that
span, and had four members selected to the Pro Bowl (T Jermon Bushrod, G
Jahri Evans, G Ben Grubbs and G Carl Nicks).
Before entering the NFL ranks, Smith spent six years at the collegiate level as
the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Butler University from 2007-
09, after joining the university as the offensive line coach in 2006. Smith helped
the Bulldogs improve from a 4-7 record in 2007 to a 11-1 record in 2009.
Smith came to Butler University from his alma mater, Miami (Ohio) University,
where worked on the coaching staff as a graduate assistant from 2004-05.
PERSONAL: Native of Milwaukee, Wis. ...Was a three-year starter and
senior captain along the offensive line at Miami (Ohio) from 2000-03, blocking
for QB Ben Roethlisberger...Graduated from Miami (Ohio) in 2004.
ASSISTANT DEFENSIVE LINE

Travis Smith enters his eighth year with the
Raiders and his first as assistant defensive line
coach. He previously served as the team’s quality
control - defense coach in 2018.
During 2018, Smith helped a revamped linebacker corps that included three
new starters in veteran LB Tahir Whitehead, and second year LBs Marquel Lee and
Nicholas Morrow. In his first season in Oakland, Whitehead led the team with 126
tackles (89 solo), which ranked seventh in club history.
In 2017, Smith aided in the continued development of DE Khalil Mack and
sixth-year pro LB Bruce Irvin as the outside linebackers coach. Mack led the
defense with 10.5 sacks and added a career-high 87 tackles (65) en route to
earning his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection. Irvin tied a career high with eight
sacks and tallied a career-high 64 tackles.
As the quality control – defense coach from 2015-16, Smith worked closely
with the defensive line, aiding Mack to numerous accolades during that span
including the Associated Press DPOY honor, the PFWA Defensive Player of the Year
Award, two First Team All-Pro selections and two Pro Bowl nods.
As the Raiders defensive assistant in 2014, Smith worked extensively with the
linebackers. In 2013, Smith helped a unit that included three new starters.
Smith joined the Raiders after spending the previous two years in the collegiate
ranks. Smith was an offensive technical intern at Colorado in 2011. He coached
at Santa Monica (Calif.) Junior College in 2010, assisting the tight ends and the
defensive linemen. He also served as an undergraduate assistant coach at Cal Poly.
PERSONAL: Native of Walnut Creek, Calif. …Attended Cal Poly, earning a
bachelor’s degree in kinesiology…Had a limited playing career at Cal Poly due
to three shoulder surgeries…Attended Foothill High School in Pleasanton, Calif.,
earning two letters as a linebacker and fullback…Smith and wife, Christina, have
a son, Jackson.
